Pandemic in perspective

Pandemic is not a synonym for crisis

…necessarily. In this case it’s more SNAFU.

I read this weekend’s Sunday Herald during lunch today. There was a double page spread on the growing “Swine Flu Crisis!” (251 Infected!*).

While I’m not sure if this graph is actually based on real figures, it does put the pandemic in perspective:

The threat of Mexican flu is quite relative. This strain may only turn out as bad as regular flu. But regular flu isn’t something to sniff at. Each year influenza occurs on a pandemic scale, this kills about 250,000 – 500,000 worldwide. So when the health authorities are saying “this is just like seasonal influenza”, they may be quite right to downplay the threat, but there is still a threat – SNAFU.

Was that enough mixed messages?

This is a bit disturbing, as at least in the movies, the T-Virus started out as a “skin rejuvinator” to bring dead skin cells back to life.

Well, at least Avon isn’t an illuminati-run trans-national that dabbles in highly experimental bioweaponry on the side … or are they!??

This is my photo of Wiggles. Taken with a camera phone while I was volunteering at the Rockhampton Zoo.

Wiggles is a southern hairy-nosed wombat, NOT a feline-porcine hybrid.

But he really is that cute. Like a furry little piglet.

There has been talk of shutting down the Rockhampton Zoo, which would spell trouble for Wiggles, their two chimpanzees and a whole host of other critters. Let’s hope some of the some of the government funding being funneled in their direction will stave of collapse for now.

Here’s another gorgeous photo of him I found online. That little stubby pointy thing is his tail by the way, not anything else.

Internet stole my weekend

My internet is being really narcoleptic lately. So if I conk out completely, please accept my apologies.

I have been subscribing like mad to feeds using iGoogle and Google Reader (I take advice!) and that’s also been sapping my internet time as well.
